Kinders go to the Polls!

Extra, Extra, read all about it!  Kinders go to the polls and vote for Alaska's Governor!  Before we took part in our school vote on Tuesday we learned about the voting process and who the candidates for Governor of Alaska were.  Their criteria for choosing a good governor had more to do with, "Hey, my Dad's friend's name is Mark!  I am voting for him!"  or "He used to be a teacher?  I want him to win!"  The best was the write-in vote for State Senator:  DaD.

We also had a great study of the heart this week in reading, writing and science, using many books to learn what a real heart looks like and how it works.  The kids were amazed that it wasn't the Valentine's Day version they are used to!  First we spent some time being curious about our hearts, and coming up with some great questions!

To answer our questions, we looked at books from the library, made models, did experiments about our heart rates, watched videos, and drew and wrote about our hearts.

We used tubes and pumps to make a model of the heart...

We learned about how to keep our hearts healthy and working well by not eating too many fatty foods.  We did an experiment to see which foods were high in fat.  The fatty ones left oil on the paper and were translucent when we held it up to the light!

We dissected a squirrel in class to see what the parts of the body actually look like inside.  We've been learning about bones, muscles, tendons, and our other organs.  The kids were grossed out and fascinated at the same time.  It was awesome!

We also honored our country's Veterans this week!  We made a handprint flag to hang in the hall for the Veterans who came to our school for the assembly on Friday.  In math we got better at reading our hundreds chart by making a hundreds chart mystery picture that turned out to be a flag.

On Friday the kids performed the patriotic songs they have been practicing in music at the annual Veteran's Day Assembly.  They did awesome!  I think the Kinders stole the show, but then, I may be a bit biased!
