Welcome to Kindergarten, Class of 2030!

The Kinders did self-portraits to put on our Kinder Art wall.  It is on the wall between the lunchroom and our classroom if you want to stop in and take a look, and will always be changing throughout the year!

We started the First Day of School off with a family activity.  Thank you to all the family members who were able to come in Monday morning!  Saying good-bye to your Kinder on the first day is a very big event!!!

Mondays are very fun days for us, with both Music and Library, so the kids had a very busy first day!

I wish you could hear this picture.  You wouldn't hear a thing!  This is everyone in the class working really hard on "their" letter...  We put our letters up in our classroom, after reading the alphabet story Chicka Chicka Boom Boom!

You may have heard about our pillow pets!  We use them at Chill Out (read aloud) Time to lay on.  We drew straws to see in which order the students would choose their very own pillow pet. Such hard choices....!

Math this week focused on getting to know shapes and numbers.  We began to see how we can break up numbers into different groups (for example, 4 is two and two) and classify numbers as odd and even.  We also practiced writing the numbers (those were all the "rainbow" numbers you saw coming home.)  Ask your student to sing you the song for each number!

To get ready for our field trip on Thursday we studied bird adaptations, and got out the microscope to take a closer look at feathers.

Thursday we took an awesome field trip to see the Tetlin National Wildlife Refuge bird banding station!

The kids got up close and personal with some parts of birds while we were waiting for some live birds to get caught in the nets.  We learned about an owl's silent flight, and measured a bird foot for a band.

We also saw some bear tracks on our hike to check the nets!!!

Still no birds.  So we played a migration game...

... and built nests....

... and had lunch... Still no birds.

...and then we decided to take one last hike to check the nets.  Guess what?  We caught FOUR birds!

It was such a great day.  Thank you so much to Tim Lorenzini from TNWR and the other biologists. Thank you also to Chris Erickson and Mike Garber for coming along with us!

The Kinders are hard at work already learning popcorn words and writing in their journals.  Here you can see one way that we brainstorm ideas... a Word Web.  The students then transferred their idea into their journal and illustrated it.

And finally, to end the post today I wanted to post a picture of my class, along with one of my favorite quotes:  "The way that you see a child is the way you will treat him.  And the way that you treat him is the way he will become."  (Ancient Chinese Proverb 😉).   This is the Best Kindergarten Class in the World!!!
