Happy Owl-oween!!!

Halloween is one of my very favorite times in Kindergarten!  We get to do so many fun things, and there is so much to learn! It is always fun to get nice and gooey while carving our pumpkins and counting the seeds.  We learned about estimating, and we each tried to estimate how many seeds were in our pumpkin by looking at the pile!  Then we counted the seeds in groups of 10, and counted by 10's to get the total!

We also learned this week about owls, using both fiction and non-fiction stories and comparing the two.  We learned about many different species of owls, their special adaptations for hunting, like sight, hearing, and silent flight, and listened to their surprisingly varied calls!  Then we learned about shapes while making our Happy Owl-oween owls!

We also worked on nutrition this week... funny, I know, for a week all about candy! But perhaps that was very appropriate after all :) .  Both classes got to take a field trip to the greenhouse either last week or this week, and make a yummy nutritious snack with the tomatoes that we picked!  We enjoyed also learning about the different vegetables and smelling the herbs that are growing there!

We also watched our germ experiment grow into some pretty nasty petri dishes!  Now THAT is SPOOKY!

Besides Halloween, the SNOW was very exciting, and made for some fun sledding at recess time!  Thanks for making sure your kinder has the Big 5: Boots, snowpants, coat, mittens or gloves, and a hat!

Of course the highlights of the week were our TWO Halloween parties!  Thank you so much to all of the families that contributed fun Halloween snacks.  The kids were just amazed and thrilled when they walked in from recess to find a table full of fun goodies!  We played "Old Joe", the touchy feely body parts game, Halloween Four Corners, Halloween BINGO, and Hide the Ghost.  AND, ask your kinder how to spell Halloween!!  The kids were adorable in their costumes, and their excitement was contagious!  I hope you all had a very Happy Halloween!

Monday we start back to our regular schedule, with all 18 kids back in the classroom at once.  We are super excited to have our aide, Jocelyn, with us full time to help with small groups and stations.  Jocelyn shared with us this week all about her culture and life in the Phillippines, and the kids and I all agreed we wish we could take a field trip there!
