Super Scientists!

The kids did a GREAT job singing and dancing in their concert, Best Self, Best Work, Best World.  They looked pretty cool in their tie-dyed T-shirts they made!  Thank you to Ms. Fastenau for putting the concert together!

In math we are working on geometry and composite shapes.  Here the kids are using the Math in a Cultural Context kits to put shapes together to make larger shapes.  Then they wrote about what shapes they had created in their journals.

In honor of our duck eggs about to hatch, we did some mini "eggsperiments" this week!  We practiced our scientific method skills, making hypotheses, doing eggsperiments, making observations and drawing or writing conclusions.  We learned about the density of water, adding salt to float an egg.  We learned about fire's use of oxygen.  We watched an egg get sucked into a bottle by burning a small flame inside the bottle, using up all the oxygen.  And we also learned what acid, pop, and tea might do to our teeth by soaking eggs in each of these liquids for a couple of days.

We reached our in class Popcorn Word goal for the year, filling up our entire board with over 100 words!  Of course we had to celebrate with a popcorn party!

We extended our learning about electricity using the kits provided by Mr. Monroe to do experiments about the conductivity of different materials.  Again, we made hypotheses about what would conduct electricity better, wood, plastic, or metal.  Then the kids used these materials in their circuits to see what would allow the electricity to flow through and light up the lightbulb.

On Friday we had some of next year's Kinders come and visit us for Kindergarten Round Up!  The Kindergarteners hosted and took their "preschool buddy" around to different centers in our room.  They were very kind, and made sure the preschoolers had a good time.  It was funny to hear, "My buddy didn't stay at her center... what should I do???"   I can hardly believe it was a year ago that our Kinders were the ones exploring kindergarten for the first time.   As we study metamorphosis and life cycles this spring, I can't help but think of the changes our Kinders have gone through this year... they are truly growing and changing so fast, in wonderful ways!  We had lots of fun with our visitors!
